We are the Friends of Lakefield Park, a group of residents and businesses in the Village of Lakefield, Selwyn Township and beyond.
We are concerned about the future of the publicly owned Township lands at the Lakefield Campground that are currently managed under contract by a privately-operated numbered company.
We believe that these lands are an outstanding and unique public resource that are not being put to their most valuable and accessible public use.
We believe that the approach of the bicentennial of Lakefield in 2022 represents an excellent opportunity to rethink and reimagine the future use of these lands, and that all local residents and businesses should have a voice in that undertaking.
It is our proposal that these public lands should no longer be contracted for private purposes, and that Selwyn Township should terminate their use by the private company as soon as possible.
Selwyn Township is planning a public consultation on the future use of these lands. We would like to encourage as many citizens as possible to engage in the consultation. We will ensure that citizens are aware of the background, history, and potential of Hague Point in Lakefield Park for uses which are compatible with and respectful of the adjacent Provincially Significant Wetland, nearby residential communities, environmentally responsible, waterfront-friendly, and publicly accessible.
